Howitzers

Heavy artillery, run as a crew.

Howitzers and heavy artillery deliver devastating indirect fire, but only as a coordinated effort. Spotter, gunner, loader, and logistics support all have to work together — and shell supply matters as much as the gun.

What this page teaches

  • What heavy artillery does
  • The four crew roles
  • Why shell supply is half the job
  • Coordinating an artillery position

What howitzers do

Howitzers are heavy indirect-fire weapons that can break fortifications, suppress regions, and destroy targets far beyond the frontline.

Their power is matched by their appetite for shells and coordination.

The crew roles

Effective artillery is a fire team, not a single player.

  • Spotter — observes targets and impacts and calls corrections
  • Gunner — aims and fires the piece based on those calls
  • Loader — keeps the gun loaded and the rhythm of fire steady
  • Logistics support — keeps a constant flow of shells coming

Why shell supply is half the job

A howitzer with no shells is scenery. Shells are heavy, expensive logistics, so a dedicated supplier hauling shells is as important as the gunner.

Plan and stage shell supply before the gun ever fires.

Coordinating the position

Howitzer positions need to coordinate target priority with the wider front, avoid friendly fire, and be ready to relocate when targeted in return.

Communication between the crew and the frontline they support is essential.

When to use heavy artillery

Use howitzers against fixed targets — fortifications, bunkers, dug-in positions — and to support major operations. Do not run heavy artillery without spotting and shell logistics in place.

An uncoordinated howitzer wastes some of the war's most expensive ammunition.

Related systems

Howitzers depend on Spotting, are threatened by Counterbattery, and step up from Mortar Basics.

Beginner mistake

Running a howitzer without dedicated shell logistics. The gun falls silent and a four-person crew sits idle.

Field tip

Staff all four roles before the first shot: spotter, gunner, loader, and a logistics player whose only job is shells.
